How long is the Tsum Valley trek?
The Tsum Valley Trek takes you to one of the most extraordinary and least-known destinations in Nepal - a sacred Himalayan valley hidden in a high, isolated enclave north of the Manaslu Circuit, inhabited by the Tsumba people, a distinct Tibetan Buddhist community with their own dialect, ancient gompas, sacred caves, and centuries-old traditions that have survived largely unchanged because the valley remained sealed to outside visitors until 2008.
The Tsum Valley (Tsum means "vivid" in the local dialect) stretches north from the Budhi Gandaki River in the Gorkha district, climbing through terraced fields, juniper forests, and mani stone walls to the high villages of Nile (3,361m), Chhule (3,480m), and ultimately to Mu Gompa (3,700m) - the ancient monastery complex at the valley's spiritual heart, set below the white peaks of Ganesh Himal (7,422m) and Sringi Himal (7,187m).
The Tsumba people are not Sherpa, not Tamang, not Gurung - they are a distinct ethnic community related to Tibetan peoples, practicing a form of Vajrayana Buddhism so conservative and devout that the entire valley has been designated a peace zone since ancient times: no hunting, no killing of animals, no violence. The monasteries here - Rachen Gompa, Mu Gompa, Gumba Lungdang - are working religious institutions with resident monks and nuns, and the cave hermitages scattered across the valley cliffs have been used by meditating Buddhist practitioners for over a millennium.
The Tsum Valley is most commonly combined with the Manaslu Circuit - entering via the Budhi Gandaki valley, diverting north at the Deng junction into the Tsum Valley, returning to the main circuit, and continuing over Larkya La. This 18-day combined itinerary is the definitive way to experience both the Tsum Valley's sacred culture and the Manaslu Circuit's mountain wilderness. The Tsum Valley can also be trekked as a standalone 12 - 14 day out-and-back from Soti Khola.

The Tsum Valley is not a landscape trek - it is a cultural immersion unlike anything else in Nepal. The valley's isolation has preserved a way of life that elsewhere in the Himalayas has been eroded by modernity, roads, and tourism. In Tsumba villages, daily life proceeds as it has for centuries: monks in burgundy robes circumambulate ancient chortens, nuns practice at Rachen Gompa, elders spin prayer wheels in doorways, and yaks graze below peaks that have never been photographed from a road.
The landscape is a secondary experience here - though it is extraordinary. The trail follows the Siyar Khola north from the Budhi Gandaki through a progressively narrowing valley, past the junction village of Lokpa, through the gates of the Tsumba homeland, and up through terraced fields of buckwheat and barley to the upper villages. The cliffs above the trail are riddled with cave hermitages - some accessible, most not. White chortens mark every ridgeline. Juniper incense burns at every gompa gate.
Mu Gompa at 3,700m is the spiritual summit of the trek - a complex of temples, monks' quarters, and meditation caves set against the backdrop of snow peaks. The main prayer hall contains hundreds of butter lamp flames, ancient thankas (religious paintings), and the reverberating sound of monks' chanting. Visiting at morning or evening puja is an unforgettable experience.
The Tsum Valley trek (standalone) is rated Moderate with a maximum altitude of 3,700m. The terrain is valley walking with gradual altitude gain rather than extreme high passes. Suitable for trekkers with basic fitness and some hiking experience. The combined Tsum Valley + Manaslu Circuit is rated Strenuous due to the Larkya La crossing.
| Location | Altitude | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lokpa (Tsum Valley junction) | 2,085m | Entry checkpoint |
| Chhokangparo | 3,031m | First upper Tsum village |
| Nile | 3,361m | Lower upper-valley settlement |
| Chhule | 3,480m | Rachen Gompa nunnery |
| Mu Gompa | 3,700m | Maximum altitude - sacred monastery complex |
| Gumba Lungdang (sky cave) | ~4,000m | Optional hike above Mu Gompa |

The Tsum Valley (standalone) is rated Moderate - the maximum altitude of 3,700m is manageable for most healthy adults with basic fitness. The valley trail has steady gradients rather than extreme ascents. The combined Tsum Valley + Manaslu Circuit adds the strenuous Larkya La crossing and is rated Strenuous - prior high-altitude experience above 4,000m is required for the combined version.
Clear skies, excellent gompa access (monks and nuns in residence), harvest season in the village fields, and stable weather throughout.
Rhododendron bloom in the lower valleys, warming temperatures, and wildflower meadows above Mu Gompa. The Tiji Festival at nearby Lo Manthang in late May can be combined.
The Tsum Valley guesthouses may be partially closed as some Tsumba families winter at lower elevations. Upper trail can be snow-covered. Possible for experienced cold-weather trekkers.
The lower Budhi Gandaki approach receives heavy monsoon rain with landslide risk. Not recommended for the full approach.
The Tsum Valley guesthouses are among the most authentic in Nepal - small, family-run lodges in stone-and-timber buildings that double as family homes. Rooms are simple but clean; communal dining around a wood fire is the norm. The Tsumba hosts are exceptionally warm and hospitable. Mu Gompa has several purpose-built trekker guesthouses. Dal bhat is universal; Tsumba specialities include tsampa porridge, local barley bread, and yak products available in the upper valley. All included meals cover breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout.
Private departures available September - November and March - May. Minimum 2 trekkers (restricted area regulation). Book at least 3 weeks in advance for permit processing. 20% deposit confirms booking.
The Tsum Valley section peaks at 3,700m - altitude sickness is possible but uncommon with the gradual ascent profile. Guide carries pulse oximeter and Diamox. Combined Manaslu version adds Larkya La (5,160m) - see Manaslu Circuit Trek page for full altitude safety information. Helicopter evacuation from the Tsum Valley is possible to Kathmandu (approx USD 2,000 - 3,500 depending on extraction point).
Mandatory. Must cover trekking to 3,800m (Tsum only) or 5,200m (combined), helicopter evacuation, and medical expenses in Nepal. We verify insurance before confirming booking.
NTB-licensed guide with Tsum Valley cultural knowledge and language capability (Tsumba dialect/Tibetan helpful for gompa interactions). Wilderness First Aid certified. Pulse oximeter and first-aid kit carried. 24/7 View Himalaya emergency support. Licensed guide is mandatory under restricted area regulations.

An unforgettable experience from start to finish. Our guide's English was excellent and he explained the local culture in real depth. A particular highlight for us was mu Gompa (3,700m) - the ancient monastery complex at the heart of the Tsum Valley. We'd book with View Himalaya again without hesitation.
