How long is the Gokyo Lakes trek?
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is one of Nepal's most spectacular mountain journeys - and for many experienced trekkers, a more rewarding experience than the classic Everest Base Camp route. In 12 days, you follow the same Lukla - Namche Bazaar approach as the EBC trail, then diverge west into the Gokyo Valley to reach a chain of six glacial lakes collectively known as the Gokyo Lakes, set in the shadow of Cho Oyu (8,188m) - the world's sixth highest mountain - beside the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest glacier at 36 kilometres long.
The centrepiece of the trek is Gokyo Ri (5,357m) - a viewpoint peak above the third lake from which the 360° panorama encompasses four of the world's five highest mountains: Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). Many trekkers who have done both say the Gokyo Ri summit view is superior to that from Kala Patthar on the EBC trail. There are no restrictions, no pre-dawn scrambles for the best spot, and the approach through the deserted Gokyo Valley has a quieter, wilder character.
Beyond Gokyo Ri, adventurous trekkers can continue to the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth lakes - each successive one quieter, less visited, and more dramatic than the last. The Sixth Lake (Ngozumpa Tsho) sits directly beside the active Ngozumpa Glacier and offers the closest accessible view of its calving icefalls. An optional crossing of the Cho La Pass (5,420m) connects the Gokyo Valley to the EBC trail for a combined high-pass route.
At View Himalaya, the Gokyo Lakes Trek is led by Khumbu-specialist guides who know every weather window and teahouse in the Gokyo Valley. Permits, the Lukla flight, and all on-trail logistics are managed from your Kathmandu arrival to your return.

The Gokyo Lakes Trek shares its first three days with the classic EBC trail - the Lukla arrival, the climb to Namche Bazaar, and the acclimatisation day in Namche with its famous Saturday market. But at Namche the routes diverge: instead of heading northeast toward Everest's south base camp, the Gokyo trail turns northwest into the Dudh Koshi valley, rising through the quieter Sherpa villages of Dole, Machhermo, and Phortse Tanga toward the first of the Gokyo Lakes.
The valley above Machhermo is strikingly different from the Everest corridor - wider, more desolate, with the grey lateral moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier dominating the left wall for the entire upper section. The three main lakes visible from the Gokyo village (Longponga, Taujung, and Gokyo Tsho) are extraordinary shades of turquoise and green - the colour comes from glacial flour suspended in the meltwater and changes through the day as light angles shift.
The Gokyo Ri climb is a 2 - 2.5 hour ascent from the village over steep rocky terrain. Most trekkers leave at 5:30 - 6:00 AM for sunrise at the summit. The view is one of Nepal's finest - arguably the single best panorama from any trekking peak in the Khumbu - with Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all simultaneously visible across the Ngozumpa Glacier.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is rated Challenging due to the sustained altitude above 4,000m and the Gokyo Ri summit at 5,357m. The trail profile is less extreme than the EBC route (no glacial moraine sections, no Kala Patthar pre-dawn descent) and the highest sleeping altitude (Gokyo at 4,750m) is lower than Gorak Shep on the EBC route. However, altitude acclimatisation is still the central management task.

The Gokyo Lakes Trek is rated Challenging. The sustained altitude above 4,000m for five consecutive days, the Gokyo Ri climb (5,357m), and the high sleeping altitude at Gokyo village (4,750m) require good acclimatisation and fitness. The trail profile is slightly less demanding than the classic EBC route - no pre-dawn high-pass crossing, no Khumbu Icefall proximity - making this an excellent high-altitude alternative for trekkers who want a serious Himalayan experience without the most extreme single-day demands.
Recommended preparation: 8 - 10 weeks of regular uphill hiking with a loaded pack. Two consecutive days of 5 - 6 hour hiking will confirm readiness. Altitude management with a two-night stay in Namche and careful observation above 4,000m is the key to success.
Peak season with crystal skies, post-monsoon green landscape, and ideal temperatures (5 - 15°C at Namche, - 5°C to 5°C at Gokyo). Busy but well-managed. Best for Gokyo Ri photography.
Rhododendron season in the lower Khumbu, good visibility, warming temperatures. Snow on Gokyo Ri reduces through April. April is peak traffic; March is quieter with some residual winter snow above 4,500m.
The Gokyo Valley is accessible in winter for experienced cold-weather trekkers. Gokyo Ri is snow-covered and requires microspikes. Nights at Gokyo village reach - 15°C to - 20°C. Some teahouses close in January. Rewards are solitude and exceptional clarity.
Heavy cloud and rain obscure mountain views. Trail conditions in the lower Khumbu are slippery. Lukla flights are frequently cancelled or delayed. Not recommended for the Gokyo Lakes experience specifically.
The Gokyo Valley teahouse network is excellent in Namche Bazaar and adequate to good above it. Gokyo village has five or six well-run teahouses with twin-share rooms, dining rooms heated by yak-dung stoves, solar charging, and Wi-Fi (paid, variable). Above Namche, rooms are simple but clean. A sleeping bag rated to - 10°C is essential at Gokyo village. Dal bhat is the trail staple; Namche has excellent bakeries, café food, and Western options.
Private departures available daily, subject to Lukla flight conditions. 20% deposit confirms your booking. Balance on arrival. Guaranteed departures - no minimum group size required.
Two nights in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and gradual ascent through Dole and Machhermo before reaching Gokyo (4,750m) provide solid acclimatisation. Pulse oximeter monitoring from Day 4 onwards. Diamox and emergency oxygen carried. Himalayan Rescue Association post at Machhermo for consultations. View Himalaya 24/7 emergency line active throughout.
Mandatory. Must cover trekking to 5,400m minimum, helicopter evacuation from Khumbu terrain (cost USD 2,500 - 5,000), medical expenses in Nepal, and trip cancellation. We verify insurance before confirming booking.
NTB-licensed Khumbu guide with minimum five seasons in the Sagarmatha NP area. Wilderness First Aid certified. Pulse oximeter carried above 3,000m. Emergency oxygen and Diamox in first-aid kit. Direct contact with Kathmandu emergency services. Porter welfare standards: 20 kg maximum load, weather gear, insurance.

Could not have asked for a smoother experience. The support crew were fantastic throughout, always checking in on us. A particular highlight for us was namche Bazaar - the legendary Sherpa capital with stunning mountain views. We'd book with View Himalaya again without hesitation.
