Dole is a teahouse village on the trail to the Gokyo Lakes, set above Namche Bazaar on the route that branches away from the main Everest Base Camp trail toward the Gokyo valley. Perched on a hillside with clear views of the surrounding Khumbu peaks, Dole plays an important role as an acclimatisation stop for trekkers heading toward Gokyo, the altitude gain from Namche to this point already significant enough to warrant a careful, measured pace.

The village sits among rhododendron and juniper scrub, increasingly sparse compared to the denser forest lower down the valley, a visible sign of the altitude already gained by this stage of the trek. Yak pastures surround the settlement, and it is common to see herds grazing on the steep hillsides above the trail, a reminder of how central yak herding remains to the local economy in this part of the Khumbu.

Most itineraries treat Dole as either an overnight stop or a lunch break on the way to Machhermo and eventually Gokyo itself, the gradual altitude gain through this section being an important part of managing acclimatisation risk on a route that eventually reaches close to 5,000 metres at the Gokyo lakes and higher still at the Gokyo Ri viewpoint. The relative quiet of this trail compared to the main Everest Base Camp route is one of its most appreciated qualities, offering comparable Himalayan scenery with noticeably less foot traffic.

Mobile signal in the area is patchy at best, and travellers should not rely on constant connectivity once they are this far into the trail network.

Weather at this elevation can change quickly, and a flexible itinerary with a buffer day or two is generally recommended for anyone travelling through this part of the route.
