How long is the Annapurna Panorama trek?
The Annapurna Panorama Trek is the ideal introduction to Himalayan trekking for first-time visitors, families with teenagers, and travellers who want genuine mountain immersion without the commitment of a multi-week expedition. This 4-day walk from Pokhara climbs through rhododendron and oak forest to the open ridge viewpoints of Australian Camp (1,900 m), Pothana (1,980 m), and Dhampus (1,650 m), where the full arc of the Annapurna Himalaya - from Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) in the west to Manaslu (8,163 m) in the east - fills the northern horizon.
The centrepiece of the view is Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) - the perfect fish-tail peak that is Nepal's most photographed mountain and the iconic skyline of Pokhara. From the Australian Camp ridge, Machhapuchhre is so close and so perfectly proportioned that it appears almost hallucinatory at dawn when the first light catches its twin summits. The Annapurna South (7,219 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), and Annapurna III (7,555 m) complete an unbroken wall of ice and rock across the northern sky.
The trail passes through Dhampus - a traditional Gurung village on the south-facing ridge - where stone-terraced fields, stone-paved village paths, and the characteristic Gurung architecture of slate-roofed houses with carved wooden windows create a living cultural landscape that has changed little in a century. Accommodation on this trek is in comfortable village guesthouses and teahouses; no camping is required. The trek begins and ends in Pokhara, making it an easy add-on to any Nepal itinerary.

Post-monsoon clarity delivers the sharpest mountain views. October is the prime month when visibility is at its best and the landscape is lush from the monsoon. November and December are clear but increasingly cold at camp level (below freezing at Pothana on December nights).
The rhododendron bloom transforms the Phedi-to-Australian-Camp forest into a spectacular tunnel of red and pink flowers in March - April. Views are excellent in February and March before the pre-monsoon haze thickens in late April. This is the most colourful season on the trail.
Cold but often brilliantly clear. Snow occasionally dusts the Australian Camp and Pothana ridge, which is beautiful but adds traction demands underfoot. Bring warm layers.
This trek is suitable for anyone in ordinary good health. No prior trekking experience is needed. The trail is entirely below 2,000 m, so altitude sickness is not a concern. Children aged 8 and above who are accustomed to hill walking manage the trek comfortably. The steepest section - the ascent from Phedi to Australian Camp - involves 1,040 m of gain over approximately 4 km of stone path. This takes 3.5 - 4 hours at a comfortable pace. The remainder of the trek is ridge walking and gentle descent. No technical terrain, scrambling, or camping.

An unforgettable experience from start to finish. The guide's local knowledge added so much depth to the trip. A particular highlight for us was dhampus village - a Gurung hill village of immense character: stone walls, prayer flags, slate roofs, terraced cardamom and millet fields, and extraordinarily hospitable local teahouse owners whose families have hosted trekkers for three generations. Thank you to the whole View Himalaya team for making this happen.
Could not have asked for a smoother experience. Our guide went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was comfortable. A particular highlight for us was pothana ridge (1,980 m) - the highest point of the trek, on the main Annapurna Panorama trail, with panoramic views opening westward to Dhaulagiri and eastward beyond Manaslu. We'd book with View Himalaya again without hesitation.
Everything about this trip was handled professionally. Having such an experienced guide made a huge difference, especially at altitude.
