How long is the Gosaikunda trek?
The Gosaikunda Trek is one of Nepal's finest short high-altitude treks - a 5-day journey from the outskirts of Kathmandu to the sacred Gosaikunda Lake complex (4,380m), a cluster of glacial lakes revered by both Hindus and Buddhists as among the most spiritually significant sites in the Himalayas. The main lake, Gosaikunda, is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his trident into the ground to quench his burning throat - making it one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Nepal.
The route climbs from Dhunche (1,963m) through rhododendron and oak forest, past the ridge crest at Lauribina La (4,609m), and down to the lakeside at Gosaikunda. The lakes sit in a high glacial basin ringed by rocky ridges and small peaks - desolate, wind-swept, and extraordinarily beautiful. On full moon nights (especially the festival of Janai Purnima in August), tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims walk barefoot from across Nepal to bathe in these sacred waters.
The trek can be completed as a 5-day out-and-back from Dhunche, or extended as a 7 - 8 day loop by descending from Gosaikunda into the Helambu Valley via Tharepati and finishing at Sundarijal near Kathmandu. This combined route - the Gosaikunda - Helambu circuit - is one of the most rewarding week-long treks in the Kathmandu region.
At View Himalaya, the Gosaikunda Trek is ideal for trekkers with limited time who want a meaningful high-altitude experience within easy reach of Kathmandu.

The Gosaikunda Trek is a direct, steep climb from the Trisuli valley to the high alpine zone - gaining 2,400m of altitude in two trekking days. The forest is magnificent: dense oak, maple, and rhododendron up to 3,500m, then open alpine scrub and grassland above. The Lauribina ridge crossing is the highest point - a windswept saddle with views north into Tibet and south over the Kathmandu Valley on clear days.
Gosaikunda itself is striking: a dark, still lake at 4,380m surrounded by barren ridgelines and small rocky peaks, with a stone shrine on a small island at its centre. There are normally eight smaller lakes visible in the surrounding basin. The atmosphere is palpably sacred - Hindu and Buddhist prayer flags, stone stupas, and the footprint of centuries of pilgrimage are everywhere.
Rated Moderate to Challenging. The rapid altitude gain (Dhunche 1,963m to Gosaikunda 4,380m in 2 days) requires good cardiovascular fitness. No prior high-altitude experience is required, but the ascent is steep and continuous. Suitable for fit adults who walk regularly. The Lauribina La (4,609m) is the challenging section - strong winds possible on the pass.

Rated Moderate to Challenging - the rapid 2,400m altitude gain in two days from Dhunche to Gosaikunda is steep and continuous. No prior Nepal trekking experience is required but regular cardio fitness (hiking, running, cycling) is important. The Lauribina La (4,609m) is exposed and windy - pack windproof layers. A good pace, adequate hydration, and listening to your guide are the keys to a safe and comfortable ascent.
Clear skies, stable weather, excellent views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal from the Lauribina ridge. October ideal. November cold but clear.
Rhododendron forests from Deurali to Chandanbari are spectacular in March - April. Lauribina La may retain snow into March. Best for botanical photography.
Gosaikunda and Lauribina La are snow-covered. Some teahouses close. Possible for experienced winter trekkers with crampons and cold-weather gear.
The Janai Purnima full moon festival (July/August) draws tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims to Gosaikunda - the most culturally dramatic time to visit. Trail is very busy. Otherwise monsoon not recommended due to rain and leeches.
Teahouses from Deurali to Gosaikunda are basic but functional - twin-share rooms with communal dining, solar electricity, and dal bhat menus. Gosaikunda itself has several teahouses directly beside the lake. Sleeping bag essential above Chandanbari. Basic snacks (noodles, eggs, pancakes) available throughout. Hot showers available at Sing Gompa for a small fee.
Private daily departures year-round (trail conditions permitting). 20% deposit confirms booking. No minimum group size. Balance on arrival.
Gosaikunda (4,380m) is reached quickly - the ascent profile is steeper than longer acclimatisation-oriented treks. Your guide monitors for AMS symptoms from Day 2. Diamox carried in first-aid kit. Descent is the cure for any worsening symptoms. Helicopter evacuation from Gosaikunda is possible to Kathmandu (approximately USD 1,200 - 2,000).
Mandatory. Must cover trekking to 4,700m, helicopter evacuation from the Gosaikunda area, and medical expenses in Nepal. Verified before booking confirmation.
