April is excellent for Rara - rhododendron forest is in full bloom on the Danphe Lagna approach, bar-headed geese arrive at the lake from their wintering grounds, and snow on the pass is minimal. May is also good; late May brings warmer temperatures that can make afternoon walking tiring in Jumla (at 2,370 m).
The Mugu district receives less monsoon rain than eastern Nepal due to its trans-Himalayan position, and the Rara Lake Trek is feasible in July and August for intrepid trekkers. However, internal flights to Jumla are most frequently cancelled in monsoon, and the Danphe Lagna approach trail can be muddy. Most trekkers prefer the cleaner autumn or spring seasons.
October and early November are ideal. Lake reflections are sharpest in the low-angle autumn light, the forest around Rara turns gold and rust, and bar-headed geese and brahminy ducks are active on the water before their southward migration.
