The Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)

The Tibet Travel Permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and is required to fly or take the train into Lhasa. It cannot be obtained independently; your tour operator applies on your behalf once your itinerary and Chinese visa are confirmed, typically requiring 15 to 20 days of processing time before departure.

Chinese Group Visa vs Individual Visa

Travellers entering Tibet via Kathmandu typically require a Chinese Group Visa arranged through their tour operator rather than an individual Chinese visa obtained at a consulate, since group visas are processed differently for Tibet-bound travel. Travellers entering via mainland China should hold a standard individual Chinese visa obtained before their trip.

Additional Permits for Specific Regions

Beyond the standard Tibet Travel Permit, certain areas require additional documentation: an Alien's Travel Permit for destinations such as Everest Base Camp, Namtso, or Shigatse; a Military Permit for areas near sensitive border regions; and a Foreign Affairs Permit for particularly remote areas such as Mount Kailash and western Tibet. Your tour operator arranges all of these as part of a comprehensive package.

Processing Timeline and Costs

Given the multi-step permit process, most tour operators recommend confirming your Tibet itinerary at least one month before departure, and longer for remote western Tibet routes such as Mount Kailash or Guge Kingdom. Permit costs are typically included in package pricing rather than charged separately.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not attempt to arrange Tibet travel independently without a registered operator, since unauthorized entry attempts are routinely denied at checkpoints. Ensure your passport has at least six months validity and several blank visa pages, and avoid booking flights or trains into Tibet before your permits are confirmed, since dates can shift during processing.
