Overview of Syabrubesi

Syabrubesi (1,503 m) is the starting point of the Langtang Valley Trek - a village at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola rivers, 117 km north of Kathmandu at the entrance to Langtang National Park. The village serves as the functional base for all trekking in the Langtang and Gosaikunda areas: teahouses, permit check posts, trekking agencies, porter hiring, and resupply are concentrated here before trekkers ascend into the national park.

Syabrubesi itself is unremarkable as a destination - it is a trailhead village whose significance is entirely logistical. The interesting landscape, culture, and mountain scenery begin 1 - 2 hours above Syabrubesi on the Langtang trail. However, the village's position at the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola confluence, below the towering walls of the Langtang National Park gorge, provides the first visual intimation of the scale that will unfold over the 4 days to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m).

Starting the Langtang Trek from Syabrubesi

The Langtang Valley Trek departs Syabrubesi on the east bank of the Langtang Khola - the trail is marked from the park entry checkpoint immediately above the village where permits and TIMS cards are checked. The first day's trail ascends through subtropical forest (bamboo, rhododendron, fern) following the Langtang Khola gorge to Lama Hotel (2,380 m) - a 5 - 6 hour walk gaining 877 m through a landscape that transitions from the warm sub-tropical zone of Syabrubesi to the temperate forest of the mid-Langtang valley.

Alternative start: some trekkers begin from Bharkhu or Rimche (both 30 - 45 minutes above Syabrubesi by vehicle on a rough road) to reduce the first day's walking time. The vehicle approach road ends at Rimche; from there the standard trail continues to Lama Hotel. This road approach is useful for groups with limited time on the first day.

Access to Gosaikunda from Syabrubesi

Syabrubesi is also the trailhead for the Gosaikunda route via Dhunche (1,950 m) - a 30-minute drive or 2-hour walk on the highway north from Kathmandu (Dhunche is actually above Syabrubesi at the Rasuwa district headquarters). From Dhunche, the Gosaikunda trail ascends through Sing Gompa (3,330 m) to Gosaikunda lake (4,380 m) in 2 days.

The Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda routes can be combined in a circuit - ascending to Kyanjin Gompa via Langtang, returning via the Lauribina La (4,610 m) to Gosaikunda and descending to Syabrubesi via Dhunche. The complete circuit (10 - 12 days) provides the full Langtang region experience.

Getting There from Kathmandu

Syabrubesi is the most road-accessible major trekking destination from Kathmandu - the Prithvi Highway and the Pasang Lhamu Highway connect Kathmandu directly to Syabrubesi in a single day's drive:

Local bus (from Machhapokhari, Kathmandu): Daily departures at 07:00; NPR 600 - 800; 7 - 8 hours. The bus route passes through Trishuli and Dhunche before descending to Syabrubesi. Basic, crowded, reliable for budget travellers.
Private car/taxi: 4.5 - 5.5 hours by private vehicle; NPR 8,000 - 12,000 one way. Faster and more comfortable; allows departure flexibility.
Jeep share from Gongabu (Kathmandu): NPR 800 - 1,000/seat; departs when full (usually 07:00 - 09:00); 6 - 7 hours. Middle option between bus and private car.

Road condition note: the road to Syabrubesi passes through the Bhote Koshi gorge - sections were damaged in the 2015 earthquake and subsequent floods. The road is generally open but check with operators for current conditions after heavy monsoon rains (July - September). October - November: road is typically reliable; January - February: occasional snow closures at the Dhunche-Syabrubesi section.

Facilities in Syabrubesi

Accommodation: 15 - 20 teahouses; NPR 400 - 800/room. Most basic amenities available. Hotel Tibet and Hotel Sherpa Garden are consistently recommended for comfort and cleanliness.
Permits: TIMS cards issued at the Langtang National Park checkpoint; Langtang National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000) available here if not purchased in Kathmandu. Bring passport photos (2) and passport copy.
Porters and guides: Available from Syabrubesi; daily rate NPR 1,200 - 1,800 for porters; NPR 2,000 - 3,000 for guides. Negotiate at the village's small trekking service office or through your teahouse.
Money: No ATM in Syabrubesi. The nearest ATM is in Dhunche (2 km above Syabrubesi by road) - withdraw all needed cash in Kathmandu or Dhunche before starting the trek.
Hot springs: The Tatopani hot springs at Syabrubesi (below the village on the Bhote Koshi bank) - a small natural hot spring pool accessible by a 15-minute walk. NPR 100 entry. A popular pre-trek or post-trek soak.
