Overview of Sarangkot

Sarangkot (1,592 m) is the ridge above Pokhara that serves as the launch platform for most of Nepal's paragliding industry, the starting point of the ZipFlyer (one of the world's steepest zip lines), and the primary sunrise viewpoint for the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from the Pokhara valley. The ridge is reached in 25 - 30 minutes by road from Pokhara's lakeside area and provides the most accessible premium Himalayan view in Nepal - no trekking permits, no altitude challenge, road access to within 5 minutes' walk of the viewpoint.

Sarangkot's name derives from the fortress (kot) built on the ridge by the Kaski kingdom - the ruins of which are visible at the summit. The ridge has been a strategic viewpoint for centuries before it became a tourism asset; the story of the Kaski kingdom and its incorporation into Prithvi Narayan Shah's unified Nepal is a thread through Pokhara's local history that the Sarangkot fort ruins make tangible.

Sunrise View from Sarangkot

The Sarangkot sunrise view - the Annapurna range turning gold as the sun rises from the east over the Kathmandu direction - is arguably the finest sunrise viewpoint accessible by road anywhere in Nepal. The key peaks visible from the Sarangkot viewpoint terrace:

Dhaulagiri (8,167 m): The seventh highest mountain on Earth, visible to the northwest at 35 km - the massive white bulk that anchors the left side of the panorama

Paragliding from Sarangkot

The thermal column generated by the Phewa Lake/Annapurna altitude differential creates some of the most reliable paragliding conditions in Asia. The Sarangkot launch point at 1,592 m is the departure platform for tandem paragliding flights that circle above Pokhara's lake and valley for 25 - 45 minutes before landing on the Pokhara lakeside strip.

The combined view from the paragliding altitude - Phewa Lake below, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range at eye level, the Pokhara valley spread beneath - cannot be replicated from any ground position. The Sarangkot ridge thermal lifts paragliders to 1,800 - 2,200 m altitude within minutes of launch, bringing the Annapurna range to eye level in a way that no viewpoint terrace can achieve. ZipFlyer Nepal

The ZipFlyer Nepal platform at Sarangkot launches riders down an 1,800 m wire from 1,592 m to 992 m altitude - a 600 m vertical drop at speeds reaching 120 - 140 km/h over 90 seconds. The platform is positioned adjacent to the paragliding launch area; many visitors combine both activities in a single Sarangkot morning excursion. Cost: USD 75 - 90 per person. Sarangkot Fort Ruins

The ruins of the Sarangkot Fort - built by the Kaski kingdom and captured by Prithvi Narayan Shah's Gorkha forces during the unification campaign of the 1760s - are visible on the ridge summit above the viewpoint terrace. The stone walls and defensive positions of the fort are partially preserved and walkable; the ruins occupy the highest point of the Sarangkot ridge (approximately 1,600 m, 8 m above the viewpoint terrace). An interpretive board installed by the Pokhara Municipality in 2018 provides historical context in English and Nepali.

Getting to Sarangkot

By taxi/car: 25 - 30 minutes from Pokhara lakeside; NPR 600 - 800 one way. The road is fully paved but steep in sections - 4WD vehicles preferred in wet weather.
By motorcycle: Rental motorcycles (NPR 700 - 1,000/day) from the lakeside cover the distance in 20 - 25 minutes.
On foot: 2 - 3 hours from the Pokhara lakeside via the village path through Rupakot - a pleasant morning walk through farm terraces and small Gurung villages. Depart by 03:30 for sunrise arrival.
Return via Peace Pagoda: From Sarangkot, a ridge walk descends southwest through forest to the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa; 1,100 m), then by boat across Phewa Lake to the lakeside - a 3 - 4 hour combination of ridge walking and lake crossing that makes the Sarangkot excursion into a full morning adventure.
