Overview of Phaplu

Phaplu (2,413 m) is the district headquarters of Solukhumbu District and the main administrative and service centre of the Solu region - the lower, more densely vegetated, and culturally rich southern portion of the Sherpa homeland, distinct from the high-altitude Khumbu above Namche Bazaar. The town sits on a broad ridge in the Phaplu valley, surrounded by pine and rhododendron forest, with the Solu Khola river system below and the first views of the Himalaya beginning to appear on the northern horizon.

Phaplu is the alternative starting point for the Everest Base Camp trek - the "Jiri walk" extended south - and functions as the regional hub for southern Solukhumbu. Unlike the high-traffic Lukla-Namche-EBC corridor, the Phaplu approach passes through the full cultural landscape of the Solu region: large Sherpa monasteries (Chiwong Gompa above Phaplu is one of Nepal's most important active monasteries), traditional agricultural villages, mani stone walls, and the terraced fields and rhododendron forests that characterise this transitional zone between the mid-hills and the high Himalaya.

Phaplu Airport

Phaplu Airport (IATA: PPL) operates Twin Otter STOL services from Kathmandu on an irregular schedule - weather-dependent, like all mountain airports in Nepal. The flight time is approximately 45 minutes versus Lukla's 35 minutes, at a similar fare (USD 100 - 140 one way). Phaplu airport has a longer runway than Lukla (the Phaplu strip is considered marginally more forgiving in terms of go-around options) and serves as a backup diversion airport for Lukla-bound flights in bad weather - meaning it occasionally receives diverted Khumbu-bound traffic during Lukla closures.

Practical note: Phaplu flights are less frequent than Lukla flights and more likely to be cancelled or rescheduled. Build 1 - 2 days flexibility into the Phaplu approach itinerary for weather delays. The airport serves Taplejung flights as well as Kathmandu routes on some schedules.

The Solu Region

The Solu region - roughly the area between Salleri in the south and Namche Bazaar in the north, centred on the Phaplu-Salleri ridge - is the agricultural and cultural heartland of the Sherpa people. While the Khumbu (above Namche) has been transformed by 60 years of Himalayan trekking tourism, the Solu retains more traditional Sherpa village life: potato and buckwheat cultivation, yak herding, extensive gompa complexes, and seasonal migration between valley and high pasture.

Chiwong Gompa (2,700 m): A 30-minute walk above Phaplu; one of Nepal's most active and architecturally significant high-altitude monasteries; hosts the Mani Rimdu festival (same as Tengboche but the Solu version) in November
Salleri: The regional market town 8 km south of Phaplu - larger market infrastructure than Phaplu itself
Ringmu and traditional villages: Small Sherpa villages on the approach north toward the Khumbu with original mani walls, prayer wheels, and agricultural terracing

Route to Khumbu from Phaplu

The standard route from Phaplu to Namche Bazaar takes 4 - 5 days through the full Solu Khumbu landscape - compared with the 2-day Lukla-Namche approach. The extended route provides superior acclimatisation (the gradual ascent from 2,413 m versus the abrupt Lukla 2,860 m start) and passes through far more culturally interesting terrain:

Day 1: Phaplu → Ringmu (2,750 m): 4 - 5 hours through mixed forest and Sherpa villages
Day 2: Ringmu → Nunthala (2,100 m): Descend to the Dudh Kosi river; 5 - 6 hours
Day 3: Nunthala → Bupsa (2,300 m): Continue up the Dudh Kosi valley; 5 hours
Day 4: Bupsa → Phakding (2,652 m): Join the main Lukla-EBC trail system; 6 - 7 hours
Day 5: Phakding → Namche Bazaar (3,440 m): Standard ascent via Hillary suspension bridges; 6 - 7 hours

The Phaplu approach joins the main Khumbu trail at Phakding - at which point trekkers from both Lukla and Phaplu are on the same route. This is the traditional Jiri-to-EBC route (shortened by starting from Phaplu instead of Jiri or Salleri).

Accommodation: Several guesthouses and basic hotels; NPR 400 - 700/night. The Himalayan Lodge and Sherpa Guest House are the main trekker-oriented options.
Hospital: Phaplu Hospital (operated by Himalayan Trust, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary) - the main medical facility for Solukhumbu District; staffed by Nepali doctors with emergency capabilities.
Money: ATM available in Phaplu - withdraw cash here; ATMs not available again until Namche Bazaar (4 - 5 days away on the Khumbu route).
Permits: TIMS and Sagarmatha National Park permits available in Kathmandu or at park entry checkpoints; not issued in Phaplu.
