Overview of Mardi Himal Base Camp
Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m) is the high point of the Mardi Himal Trek - a 5 - 6 day route from Pokhara that ascends the eastern ridge above the Modi Khola valley to a viewpoint within 5 km of Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) and Mardi Himal (5,587 m). The trek was formally opened to trekkers in 2012 and has grown rapidly in popularity as trekkers seeking an Annapurna-region experience with less crowding than the main ABC route have discovered it.
The Mardi Himal Trek's defining characteristic is the sustained ridge-top walking from Forest Camp (2,550 m) to the High Camp (4,500 m) - a 1,950 m ridgeline ascent through rhododendron forest (spectacular in March - April), alpine meadow, and rocky high terrain that keeps the Annapurna range visible on the western horizon throughout the ascent. The final camp at 4,500 m - positioned on the Mardi Himal east ridge directly below the Machhapuchhre south face - provides a closer and more intimate view of the Fishtail Mountain than any other accessible camp on the Annapurna trekking circuit.
The View of Machhapuchhre
Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) - Nepal's most iconic mountain silhouette, sacred to Shiva and officially closed to climbing - is the dominant presence at Mardi Himal Base Camp. At 5 km horizontal distance and 2,493 m below the summit, the scale of the south face is genuinely overwhelming from the camp position. The hanging glaciers, the perfectly triangular summit profile, and the double-peak structure (the "fishtail" visible only from this southern angle and from Pokhara's lakeside) are all clearly visible in good morning light.
The camp's position also provides views of Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m) - the ABC ridge peaks visible above the Modi Khola valley to the northwest - and the broader Annapurna I summit (8,091 m) above the high ridge. The Mardi Himal peak itself (5,587 m) rises to the north above the camp.
