Khopra Ridge: The Annapurna's Off-Track Viewpoint at 3,660 m

Overview of Khopra Ridge

Khopra Ridge (3,660 m) is the focal point of the Khopra Danda Trek - a community-managed 4 - 5 day extension of the Poon Hill circuit that takes trekkers south into the Annapurna Conservation Area's less-visited interior. The ridge - a broad, windswept high plateau south of Poon Hill and west of Ghorepani - provides an unobstructed panoramic view of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Nilgiri (7,061 m), and the Annapurna range from an angle and altitude that the main Poon Hill circuit cannot replicate.

Khopra Ridge is the Annapurna equivalent of Pikey Peak - a legitimate alternative viewpoint that trekkers who have done Poon Hill consistently rate as their preferred Annapurna foothill experience on a second visit. The community lodge network (Khopra Danda Community Lodge, Swanta) makes the trek self-sufficient without camping equipment, while the limited visitor numbers (an estimated 2,000 - 3,000/year versus Poon Hill's 70,000+) provide a solitude experience that the main circuit cannot currently deliver.

Khaire Lake Extension (4,500 m)

Above Khopra Ridge, a half-day extension continues north to Khaire Lake (4,500 m) - a sacred glacial lake in a stone bowl at the base of the ridge above the community lodge. The lake is sacred to the Magar community and the surrounding terrain is pristine alpine grassland and boulder field transitioning to permanent snow above 4,800 m. The Khaire Lake extension is Khopra Ridge's "bonus" - the lake itself is beautiful in the high alpine setting, and the altitude gain from the lodge to the lake (840 m) provides meaningful acclimatisation for trekkers planning to continue to higher destinations.

Mountain Views from Khopra Ridge

The view from Khopra Ridge's main viewpoint faces northwest and north - a panorama that includes:

  • Dhaulagiri (8,167 m): The dominant mountain from this angle - the east face and north ridge of Dhaulagiri visible in a profile rarely seen from the main Annapurna circuit viewpoints. At 35 km horizontal distance, Dhaulagiri fills the western sky.
  • Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) and Nilgiri (7,061 m): The Kali Gandaki gorge peaks in direct view
  • Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m): The main Annapurna massif visible to the northeast - the same peaks seen from Poon Hill but at a different angle that reveals the eastern flanks not visible from the standard Poon Hill position
  • Fang (7,647 m): The subsidiary peak of Annapurna I visible above the ridge - rarely mentioned in standard itineraries but prominent from Khopra

Community Lodges on the Khopra Trek

The Khopra Danda Community Lodge system - a network of community-managed guesthouses established by local Magar communities with ACAP support - provides accommodation and meals on the Khopra Trek without commercial teahouse infrastructure. Lodges at Swanta (2,200 m), Narchyang (2,540 m), Bayeli (3,000 m), and Khopra Danda (3,660 m) are all community-managed; revenue supports village development, conservation, and trail maintenance rather than commercial operators. Room rates: NPR 600 - 1,000; meals NPR 400 - 600. Booking ahead recommended for October peak season.

Route from Ghorepani

The Khopra Ridge trek is most commonly done as a 4 - 5 day circuit from Nayapul:

  • Day 1: Nayapul → Ulleri (2,050 m) → Ghorepani (2,850 m)
  • Day 2: Ghorepani → Poon Hill sunrise → Bayeli (3,000 m) → Khopra Danda (3,660 m)
  • Day 3: Khopra Danda → Khaire Lake (4,500 m) → return to Khopra Danda
  • Day 4: Khopra Danda → Swanta (2,200 m) via Chitre/Narchyang → Tatopani or Beni for road exit
