Kathmandu and Pokhara are Nepal's two major cities, connected by approximately 200 km of road across the Nepal mid-hills - the Prithvi Highway, which is simultaneously one of Nepal's most scenic roads and one of its most accident-prone. The practical transport choices for tourists are: domestic flight (25 minutes), tourist bus (6 - 8 hours), or private vehicle with driver (5 - 6 hours). Local buses exist but are not appropriate for travellers unfamiliar with Nepal.

The choice depends on your budget, your time, your tolerance for mountain road travel, and whether you want to see the mid-hills landscape between the two cities. Each option has genuine advantages.

By Domestic Flight

The Kathmandu - Pokhara flight is 25 minutes in the air - one of the most scenic domestic flights in the world on a clear morning. The aircraft (typically a 70 - 90 seat turboprop on Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, or Nepal Airlines, or a smaller plane on other carriers) flies at approximately 7,500 m - low enough to see the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and the entire Annapurna range from the left-hand window seat. Book a seat on the left side of the aircraft (facing forward) for the mountain views.

Verdict on the Flight

If your time in Nepal is limited and you have the budget, fly. The 25-minute mountain panorama is genuinely memorable and the time saved compared to the bus (6+ hours) is significant on a 10 - 14 day itinerary. On a clear October morning, the view from the aircraft window justifies the price difference over the bus on its own.

By Tourist Bus or Coach

Tourist buses are the most popular budget option for the Kathmandu - Pokhara journey. They are larger and more comfortable than local buses, operate on a fixed schedule, and stop at tourist-oriented service stations along the route. The journey takes 6 - 8 hours depending on road conditions and traffic.

Road Safety Note

The Prithvi Highway is Nepal's most important road but also one of its most accident-prone. Narrow sections, sharp curves above river gorges, overtaking on blind bends, and heavy truck traffic are all factors. Tourist buses are safer than local buses (experienced drivers, better maintained vehicles) but the road risk is real. Consider this honestly if you are risk-averse about road travel in developing countries. The flight is meaningfully safer.

By Private Vehicle with Driver

Hiring a private car with driver for the Kathmandu - Pokhara journey is the best balance of comfort, speed, and flexibility. A private Toyota Hi-Ace or Land Cruiser with an experienced driver costs USD 100 - 150 for the vehicle (split across all passengers). For a group of 3 - 4, this is comparable per-person cost to the tourist bus with significantly more comfort and flexibility.

Advantages of Private Vehicle

• Depart on your schedule: Leave at 06:00 to arrive in Pokhara by noon for an afternoon of activities
• Stop where you want: The Prithvi Highway passes through the Trishuli River gorge (good whitewater views), Bandipur (a beautifully preserved Newari hilltop town - worth a 2-hour stop), and the Marsyangdi valley junction. A private vehicle lets you add a Bandipur stop that tourist buses don't accommodate
• Door-to-door comfort: No transfer between bus park and hotel; the driver takes you directly to your Pokhara accommodation
• Group value: For 3 - 4 people, USD 30 - 40 per person is comparable to the premium tourist bus rate

The Bandipur Detour

Bandipur, a Newari trading town preserved on a ridge above the Prithvi Highway, is the best reason to travel this route by private vehicle rather than flying. The 19th-century town centre - car-free, flagstone streets, carved-wood windows - is one of the finest examples of traditional Newari architecture outside the Kathmandu Valley. A 2-hour stop here turns the Kathmandu - Pokhara transit into a genuine destination in its own right.

Local Bus (Not Recommended)

Local buses operate the Kathmandu - Pokhara route but are not recommended for most international tourists. They are slower (8 - 10 hours), more crowded, less comfortable, and stop at every town along the route. The cost saving (NPR 400 - 500 versus USD 15 - 25 for a tourist bus) is not worth the additional risk and discomfort unless you are specifically interested in the local transport experience and have a strong stomach for mountain road bus travel.

How to Book

• Domestic flights: Book directly through the airline websites (Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines) or through a Kathmandu travel agent. Book at least 1 - 2 weeks in advance during peak season (October - November, March - April); same-day booking is often possible in low season.
• Tourist buses: Buy at any Thamel travel agent the day before departure. No advance booking needed except during Dashain/Tihar festival weeks (October) when buses are completely full.
• Private vehicle: Arrange through your Kathmandu hotel, a trusted travel agent, or services like Booking.com's Nepal transport options. Confirm the vehicle type, driver details, and whether the fare includes fuel and driver's food. NPR cash payment on arrival in Pokhara is standard.

Arriving in Pokhara

Pokhara airport (PKR) is 3 km from Lakeside - the tourist district on the eastern shore of Phewa Lake where most accommodation is concentrated. Taxi from the airport: NPR 400 - 600 (negotiate before getting in or use a pre-arranged pickup with your hotel). The tourist bus park is in Baglung Bus Park area near Lakeside - a NPR 200 - 300 tuk-tuk or taxi ride to most hotels. Private vehicles drop you directly at your hotel.

If arriving early (before 12:00), many Pokhara hotels will accommodate early check-in for a small fee or hold your bag while you have breakfast at a lakeside café. The Lakeside café strip begins serving from 07:30.
