Overview of Chisapani

Chisapani (2,175 m) is the standard first overnight stop on the Helambu trek and the Langtang circuit's northern approach - a ridge village on the southern edge of the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, 13 km northeast of Kathmandu as the crow flies and only 2.5 - 3 hours of walking from the Sundarijal reservoir on Kathmandu's northern edge. It also serves as the connection point for the classic Chisapani - Nagarkot overnight trek - a 2-day ridge walk that passes Chisapani's north-facing mountain views and Nagarkot's east-facing sunrise views in a single circuit from Kathmandu.

The Sundarijal Approach

The trail from Sundarijal (1,460 m) - a Kathmandu northern suburb accessible by taxi in 30 - 40 minutes from central Kathmandu - ascends through the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Chisapani in 2.5 - 3 hours. The trail passes through dense oak, pine, and rhododendron forest within the national park - one of the few areas of primary forest remaining on the Kathmandu Valley rim. The ascent gains 715 m and is well-maintained with intermittent viewpoints looking back toward the Kathmandu basin.

National Park entry fee: NPR 500 at the Sundarijal checkpoint. The trail within the park is clearly marked; no guide required for the Sundarijal - Chisapani section.

The Chisapani Guest House and Sherpa Guest House are the longest-established operations with consistent food quality. Views from the dining room windows are the main attraction - most teahouses position their dining areas facing north for the Himalayan view.
