Overview of Chhukung
Chhukung (4,730 m) is the highest permanent settlement in the Imja valley - a cluster of teahouses and lodges 8 km east of Dingboche (4,410 m) at the base of the Imja Glacier moraine, beneath the southwest face of Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189 m). The valley ends here: above Chhukung, the glacier-carved Imja valley closes into the high cirque of Lhotse, Nuptse, Island Peak, and Baruntse - one of the most dramatic mountain amphitheatres in the Khumbu.
Chhukung is a side-valley detour from the main EBC trail (which runs through Dingboche toward Lobuche) and is visited by three groups of trekkers: those doing acclimatisation walks up the Imja valley before Lobuche and Gorak Shep; Island Peak climbers using Chhukung as their base camp staging area; and Three Passes trekkers approaching Kongma La from the higher starting point that Chhukung's altitude provides (320 m higher than starting from Dingboche).
Chhukung as Island Peak Base
Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189 m) is Nepal's most climbed trekking peak - approximately 3,000 - 4,000 permit climbers annually attempt its northeast ridge. Chhukung serves as the base camp village where expedition groups stage before the 45-minute walk to the Island Peak Base Camp proper (5,087 m) on the glacier above the village.
The standard Island Peak itinerary from Chhukung:
- Day 1 at Chhukung: Acclimatisation; short walk to 5,000 m on the Imja Glacier lateral moraine
- Day 2: Move to Island Peak Base Camp (5,087 m; 45 minutes above Chhukung) for camp setup
- Summit day: 01:00 - 02:00 start from high camp (5,600 m); summit by 08:00 - 10:00; return to Chhukung same day. Total summit day: 10 - 14 hours.
NMA trekking peak permit cost: USD 250 per person. A licensed climbing guide is mandatory. Success rate is approximately 60 - 70% for well-prepared teams - the headwall above the glacier requires fixed rope skills, and altitude (6,189 m) demands genuine acclimatisation. Many teams are unsuccessful due to poor acclimatisation rather than technical difficulty.
Chhukung Ri Day Hike
Chhukung Ri (5,546 m) is the high rocky ridge above Chhukung - the classic acclimatisation day hike that all trekkers staying at Chhukung should attempt. The ascent from Chhukung (4,730 m) is 816 m - significant at altitude - but the non-technical ridge walk takes 2 - 3 hours and provides one of the best high-altitude viewpoints in the Khumbu available without technical climbing:
- Lhotse south face from 5,500 m - the full 3,000 m vertical wall above the Lhotse Glacier
- Ama Dablam (6,812 m) directly to the southwest - the most photographed mountain in the Khumbu from this angle
- Makalu (8,485 m) to the east - the fifth highest mountain visible as a sharp pyramid
- Baruntse (7,129 m) above the Imja Glacier to the southeast
Descent from Chhukung Ri takes 1.5 - 2 hours. Total day hike: 4 - 5 hours. Non-technical but demanding - the high altitude makes what would be a 2-hour hike at lower elevation an all-day physical effort.
Mountain Views from Chhukung
The Imja valley above Chhukung closes into one of the most spectacular high mountain amphitheatres accessible to trekkers in Nepal. From the village itself, the surrounding peaks are overwhelming in scale:
- Lhotse (8,516 m): The southwest face directly north - the 4th highest mountain on Earth at 15 km distance. The connecting ridge between Lhotse and Nuptse forms the entire northern wall of the valley.
- Island Peak / Imja Tse (6,189 m): The accessible trekking peak immediately east of the village - its northeast ridge the route that thousands attempt annually
- Baruntse (7,129 m): The massive peak closing the eastern end of the valley; the northeast face from Chhukung
- Ama Dablam (6,812 m): Visible to the southwest - the elegant mountain that dominates the western view from Chhukung
Kongma La Approach from Chhukung
Three Passes trekkers often use Chhukung as a higher starting point for the Kongma La crossing (5,535 m) - starting from 4,730 m rather than Dingboche (4,410 m) reduces the total Kongma La ascent by 320 m (from 1,125 m to 805 m). The trail from Chhukung toward Kongma La climbs the moraine northeast of the village before joining the main pass route. The Dingboche-to-Chhukung acclimatisation walk is a standard part of most Three Passes itineraries regardless of which starting point is used for Kongma La day.
