March - May (Spring)

Good flight conditions early in spring; the Mustang plateau begins to warm and the area sees strong Hindu pilgrimage traffic through April and May. Jomsom winds are strongest in May but flights generally operate.

June - September (Monsoon)

Muktinath and the upper Mustang plateau lie in the rain shadow of the Himalaya and receive far less monsoon precipitation than the Nepal hills. The area remains accessible and pilgrimage continues. Flight regularity is slightly reduced in the monsoon months.

Altitude Note

Muktinath is at 3,800 m - significant altitude for visitors arriving by STOL flight from Pokhara (which is at 822 m). The gain of nearly 3,000 m in a single 20-minute flight means the body has no time to acclimatise gradually. Most visitors experience mild altitude symptoms (headache, breathlessness on stairs, disturbed sleep) on the first night. The tour itinerary builds in a gentle Day 1 afternoon to allow initial acclimatisation before the active temple circuit on Day 2. Drink 3 - 4 litres of water per day, avoid alcohol on arrival, and do not exert yourself strongly on the afternoon of Day 1. Severe symptoms (persistent vomiting, loss of coordination, gurgling chest) are rare at 3,800 m but warrant immediate descent to Jomsom; vehicle return is available on short notice.
