How long is the Lower Dolpo trek?
The Lower Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal's most remote and visually spectacular journeys - a 16-day expedition into the far western highlands to reach Phoksundo Lake (3,611 m), the deepest and most dramatically coloured lake in Nepal. Fed by glacial meltwater and mineral-rich bedrock, Phoksundo's waters shift from emerald to turquoise to deep cobalt depending on the angle of light, surrounded by sheer amber cliffs that drop straight into the water. The lake sits at the heart of Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest protected area at 3,555 sq km, a landscape of soaring canyon walls, ancient Bon Buddhist monasteries, and yak-grazed plateau pastures that connects the high Himalaya with the Tibetan borderland.
Dolpo was closed to outsiders until 1989 and remains one of Nepal's most restricted and culturally protected regions. The Dolpo-pa people - a blend of Tibetan, Bonpo, and local highland heritage - follow an ancient Bon Buddhist faith that predates Tibetan Buddhism and survives intact in a handful of villages around Phoksundo and the upper Dolpo plateau. Ringmo village (3,611 m), perched above the lake's south shore, contains one of the oldest and best-preserved Bon gompas in Nepal. This cultural encounter, the sheer drama of the canyon approach from Dunai, and the otherworldly colour of Phoksundo Lake combine to make Lower Dolpo a bucket-list destination for trekkers who have already walked the main Nepal corridors and want something genuinely different.
The 16-day itinerary includes two internal flights (Kathmandu - Nepalgunj - Juphal), a gradual approach through Shey Phoksundo National Park from Dunai, three nights at Phoksundo Lake for deep exploration, and a return via a higher variation through Rohagaon. The maximum trekking altitude is approximately 4,200 m on a day hike toward the Phoksundo Glacier viewpoint - making this a moderate-to-strenuous trek without a technically demanding high pass.

Prices include internal flights (Kathmandu - Nepalgunj - Juphal return), all trekking permits, a licensed guide and porter, teahouse accommodation, and three meals per day on trek. A 20 % deposit confirms your booking; the balance is due 30 days before departure. Lower Dolpo permits must be arranged at least three weeks in advance.
The Lower Dolpo Trek combines internal flights, jeep transfer, and sustained trail trekking through one of Nepal's wildest landscapes. The approach from Dunai (2,140 m) follows the Suli Gad river canyon for three days, passing through mixed forest and riverside trails before climbing sharply to the lake's altitude. The canyon is dramatic but lower in altitude than most Nepal highland treks - the technical challenge is in the long daily distances (18 - 22 km per day on approach days) and the remote logistics rather than extreme altitude.
Infrastructure is basic. Teahouses operate between Dunai and Ringmo but are smaller and more spartan than in the Everest or Annapurna regions. Electricity is solar; expect limited charging. Mobile signal is absent from Chhepka onward. The Ringmo teahouses directly above Phoksundo Lake are the most comfortable on the route, with proper beds, a solid menu, and a dining room with lake-facing windows. Bring warm layers - evenings at 3,611 m drop to - 5 °C even in October. Three nights at the lake is not excessive; the scale and silence of the place make it one of the most powerful overnight experiences in Nepal.
The Lower Dolpo Trek suits fit trekkers comfortable with multi-day remote journeys and basic teahouse conditions. No prior high-altitude experience is strictly required - maximum sleeping altitude is 3,611 m - but comfort with long walking days on rough trails, and acceptance of genuinely remote logistics, is essential.

The Lower Dolpo Trek is rated moderate to strenuous. The maximum sleeping altitude is 3,611 m at Phoksundo Lake - considerably lower than most Nepal high-altitude treks - which reduces altitude risk significantly. The challenge comes from long daily distances on approach days (16 - 22 km), rough canyon trail surfaces, and the remoteness of the region where logistical support is limited. The return day from Rohagaon to Dunai (Day 13) is the longest and most tiring at approximately 22 km and 1,250 m descent.
To prepare, aim for 3 hours of trail walking per week for 6 - 8 weeks before departure. Downhill knee strength is important for the long descent days. Trekking poles are strongly recommended throughout. No prior Himalayan trekking experience is strictly required, but previous experience on multi-day treks in rough terrain (Nepal, Patagonia, African highlands, or similar) is a significant advantage.
April and May bring warm temperatures and rhododendron bloom on the lower approach from Dunai. Phoksundo Lake is fully thawed by April and the glacier viewpoint trail is clear of snow. Afternoon cloud can build over the mountains from 2:00 pm. This is a quieter period than autumn - an excellent option for those wanting fewer encounters with other trekkers.
Unlike most Nepal trekking destinations, Dolpo sits in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow and receives limited monsoon rainfall. July and August treks are feasible, though the lower approach from Dunai receives more precipitation than the inner Dolpo. Internal flights to Juphal are more frequently weather-delayed in monsoon season.
September through November is the optimal window. Post-monsoon skies are clear, temperatures are ideal (10 - 18 °C by day, - 2 °C to 5 °C at night at Phoksundo), and the lake colour is most intense in the low autumn angle of light. October is the single best month - stable weather, clear peaks, and the Dolpo harvest creating vivid scenes in Ringmo and the approach villages.
High passes above Phoksundo and the Juphal airstrip are affected by winter snow. Teahouses in Ringmo operate year-round, but the approach trail above 3,000 m can be snowy and cold. January and February are the most challenging months. Only very experienced winter trekkers with full camping equipment should attempt a winter Dolpo journey.
Between Dunai and Ringmo, teahouses provide simple twin-share rooms with basic beds and blankets. The Ringmo teahouses at Phoksundo Lake are the most comfortable on the route, with heated dining rooms and views directly over the water. Hot bucket showers cost NPR 200 - 400. Solar power provides limited LED lighting and phone charging. Sleeping bags rated to - 10 °C are recommended; hire available in Kathmandu.
The trek menu features standard Nepali fare - dal bhat, vegetable curry, noodle soup, fried rice, and chapati. Ringmo adds locally produced buckwheat bread and occasional yak cheese or butter tea. Trail snacks are almost unavailable above Dunai; stock up on nuts, energy bars, and dried fruit in Kathmandu or Nepalgunj before the flight to Juphal.
Lower Dolpo departures run April through May and September through November. Internal flights to Juphal are weather-dependent - a built-in buffer day at Nepalgunj or Dunai on both directions is strongly advised. The minimum two-trekker requirement means private bookings are available on any of these dates with three weeks' notice.
The Lower Dolpo Trek's maximum sleeping altitude of 3,611 m is well within the range manageable by most fit trekkers without prior high-altitude experience. However, the approach gains altitude rapidly on Day 6 - ascending 511 m from the Phoksundo Khola (3,100 m) to Ringmo in 3 - 4 hours. The rest day on Day 7 allows proper adjustment before the glacier viewpoint day hike to 4,200 m.
Travel and emergency rescue insurance is mandatory for the Lower Dolpo Trek. Your policy must cover helicopter evacuation to a minimum altitude of 4,500 m (for the glacier day hike) and emergency medical treatment in Nepal. Juphal's remote location means helicopter evacuation is the only option in a medical emergency above Dunai.
