Chhepka is a small settlement on the long approach to Upper Dolpo, set along the Suli Gad river gorge in dense lower-elevation forest, one of the early overnight stops on what is among the most remote treks anywhere in Nepal. Reached after a multi-day walk from the airstrip at Juphal via Dunai, Chhepka sits in a landscape still relatively green and forested compared to the stark, high-altitude terrain that defines the upper reaches of the Dolpo region further ahead.

The village is modest, a small cluster of houses and basic teahouses serving the limited but steadily growing number of trekkers who make the journey into this restricted area, one of Nepal's most tightly controlled trekking regions given its sensitive position near the Tibetan border and its historically isolated Bon and Tibetan Buddhist communities. The Suli Gad river runs alongside the trail here, its forested banks providing habitat for a range of birdlife and, at higher elevations further along the same drainage, some of the last strongholds of the snow leopard in Nepal.

Chhepka's position within the forested lower section of the Dolpo approach makes it an important staging point for acclimatisation, allowing trekkers to adjust gradually before the trail climbs into the more exposed, higher-altitude terrain surrounding Phoksundo Lake and the more remote reaches of Upper Dolpo beyond. Facilities remain basic throughout this section of the trek, and most trekking groups travel with a degree of camping support to supplement the limited teahouse infrastructure available in villages like Chhepka.

Trekking groups heading further into Upper Dolpo typically treat Chhepka as one of several gradual acclimatisation stages, spacing out the ascent carefully given how remote and difficult evacuation would be if altitude sickness developed further along the trail.

Wildlife sightings, while never guaranteed, add an extra layer of interest to the walk through this forested gorge section.
