How long is the Dhulikhel Tour?
Dhulikhel (1,550 m) is the finest viewpoint town in the eastern Kathmandu Valley - a small medieval Newari market town set on a ridge with an unobstructed panorama of the high Himalaya from Langtang (7,227 m) in the northwest to Gaurishankar (7,134 m) and Numbur (6,957 m) in the east. Just 30 km from Kathmandu on the Arniko Highway, Dhulikhel is the traditional overnight destination for visitors wanting a pre-dawn Himalayan sunrise view from the valley rim without committing to the higher altitude of Nagarkot, combined with two of the Kathmandu Valley's most worthwhile half-day excursions: the Namobuddha monastery hike and the medieval town of Panauti.
The 2-day Dhulikhel Tour is structured for maximum reward with minimum effort: Day 1 afternoon arrival in Dhulikhel and exploration of the town's Newari heritage streets and temples; the dawn sunrise panorama from the Dhulikhel viewpoint hill (an easy 20-minute walk from the central guesthouses); the morning hike to Namobuddha (1,750 m), one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, where legend holds that Prince Mahasattva offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs; and the afternoon visit to Panauti, a medieval Newari town at the confluence of the Punyamati and Rosi rivers, with its complete 15th-century temple square and extraordinary carved wood architecture surviving with far fewer visitors than Bhaktapur.
The combination of Dhulikhel, Namobuddha, and Panauti represents one of the most satisfying two-day cultural and scenic excursions available from Kathmandu, yet fewer than 5% of Kathmandu visitors take the time to do it. For those who do, it consistently outranks the more famous Kathmandu Durbar Square circuit in depth of experience.

The finest Himalayan sunrise views from Dhulikhel occur in October and November when post-monsoon clarity is at its maximum and the Langtang - Gauri Shankar range is crystal clear at dawn. The Namobuddha trail is ideal in these months: dry, clear, and cool.
March and April bring rhododendron bloom to the Namobuddha trail and warm valley temperatures. The Himalayan views are excellent in February before the pre-monsoon haze builds in late April.

Could not have asked for a smoother experience. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we were safe every step of the way. A particular highlight for us was namobuddha monastery (1,750 m) - one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the Kathmandu region, the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery complex here is an active Kagyu school monastery with hundreds of resident monks; the stupa marking Prince Mahasattva's offering is adorned with thousands of prayer flags; the monastery can be visited with permission and the monks are generally welcoming. We'd book with View Himalaya again without hesitation.
An unforgettable experience from start to finish. Our guide went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was comfortable. A particular highlight for us was namobuddha hike - the 3-hour forest trail from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha passes through oak and rhododendron forest on a quiet ridge path used mainly by local pilgrims; the trail has excellent views of the eastern Himalaya throughout. If you're considering this trip, just book it - you won't regret it.
