How long is the Champadevi Hike?
The Champadevi Hike climbs the southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley to the hilltop shrine at 2,278 m - one of the valley's highest accessible viewpoints, with an unobstructed panorama north across the entire valley floor to the inner Himalaya including Langtang (7,227 m), Ganesh Himal, and on exceptionally clear days the distant white summits of the Rolwaling range. The hike begins at the ancient pilgrimage town of Pharping (1,500 m) - home to the Yangleshö cave complex where the Tantric master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have attained enlightenment in the 8th century - and ascends through pine and rhododendron forest to the small Champadevi shrine (Champa Devi, the local female deity) at the summit.
The trail combines two of the valley's most significant pilgrimage connections: the Dakshinkali Temple (goddess Kali) at the base of the southern valley, one of Nepal's most important Tantric Hindu shrines and the site of animal sacrifice on Tuesdays and Saturdays; and the Guru Rinpoche caves at Pharping, where the Asura and Yangleshö caves are two of the most sacred Vajrayana Buddhist sites in the Himalayan world. The Champadevi ridgeline itself is a wind-scoured forested crest dotted with prayer flags, mani walls, and small stone shrines maintained by both Hindu and Buddhist communities - a characteristic Nepali overlap of two great traditions at a single high place.
The Champadevi Hike takes 4 - 5 hours return at a comfortable pace (approximately 778 m of ascent from Pharping to summit) and can be done as a half-day morning departure from Kathmandu, returning to the city by early afternoon. Alternatively, including the Dakshinkali Temple visit and the Pharping cave complex makes it a rich full-day excursion.

Post-monsoon clarity gives the finest panoramic views from the Champadevi summit - the Himalayan wall is visible from Langtang to Gaurishankar across the valley. The forest is lush from the monsoon; the trail is dry and solid.
Rhododendron season transforms the upper forest section of the trail. The views are excellent in February - March before pre-monsoon haze builds. April brings warmth at the valley rim and the possibility of seeing rare Satyr Tragopan and other pheasants in the forest.

A genuinely well organised and memorable trip. The support crew were fantastic throughout, always checking in on us. A particular highlight for us was prayer flag ridgeline - the Champadevi summit ridge is strung with prayer flags and small stone cairns maintained by both Hindu and Buddhist communities; the wind at the top regularly lifts the flags into a continuous horizontal stream that makes for one of the valley's most atmospheric summit photographs. If you're considering this trip, just book it - you won't regret it.
One of the best trips we've ever taken. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we were safe every step of the way. A particular highlight for us was forest trail character - the ascent from Pharping passes through a zone of pine and rhododendron forest that feels completely separate from the urbanised valley below; the trail is used mainly by local pilgrims and is genuinely quiet even on weekends. If you're considering this trip, just book it - you won't regret it.
A genuinely well organised and memorable trip. Our guide went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was comfortable. A particular highlight for us was pharping's Guru Rinpoche caves - the Yangleshö (Asura) cave where Padmasambhava attained the Vajrakilaya siddhi in the 8th century; one of the holiest Vajrayana Buddhist sites in Nepal; active retreat caves still used by meditators today. Would recommend this to friends and family without any reservation.
