Phoksundo La Base is the staging camp below Phoksundo La, a high and technically demanding pass connecting the Phoksundo Lake area to the more remote reaches of Upper Dolpo, one of the more serious crossings found on the extended Dolpo trekking circuit. Sitting well above the treeline in stark, high-altitude terrain, the base camp serves trekkers preparing for a genuinely demanding crossing that requires good weather, proper acclimatisation, and often a willingness to camp given the lack of teahouse infrastructure at this altitude.

The pass itself presents one of the more technically serious crossings found on any standard Nepal trekking circuit, with sections requiring careful navigation over loose scree and occasionally snow-covered terrain depending on the season, and trekkers typically require the support of an experienced local guide or crew familiar with current conditions. Views from the base camp and the pass above extend across a genuinely remote and rarely visited stretch of the Upper Dolpo landscape.

Because of the difficulty and remoteness of this crossing, only a small fraction of trekkers who visit Phoksundo Lake continue on to attempt Phoksundo La, most choosing instead to return via the same route they arrived on. For those with the time, experience, and proper support to attempt it, however, the crossing represents one of the most genuinely adventurous and remote high-altitude passes available anywhere in the Nepal Himalaya.

Weather at this elevation can change quickly, and a flexible itinerary with a buffer day or two is generally recommended for anyone travelling through this part of the route.
