Charikot is a district headquarters town in Dolakha district, reached by road from Kathmandu, and the principal gateway for treks into the remote Rolwaling valley. Sitting along the Bhote Koshi highway at a moderate elevation with views toward the surrounding hills, Charikot serves a similar function to other district headquarters towns found at the start of Nepal's more remote trekking routes: a final point of proper infrastructure, shops, and vehicle access before the trail leaves the road behind entirely.

The town itself is a working administrative and market centre rather than a tourist destination, and most trekkers pass through quickly, using it primarily to arrange final logistics, top up on supplies, or overnight before the walk into Rolwaling begins the following morning. From Charikot, the trail heads generally north-east into increasingly forested and then increasingly barren terrain as it follows the Rolwaling valley toward Beding, Na, and eventually the technical high pass crossings that make this one of Nepal's more demanding trekking routes.

Charikot also serves communities affected by the 2015 earthquake, which caused significant damage across much of Dolakha district, and reconstruction efforts remain visible in parts of the town even a decade on. For trekkers, Charikot's primary value is practical rather than scenic: a reliable staging point with the last dependable mobile signal and shops before the far more remote and physically demanding stages of the Rolwaling trek begin in earnest over the days that follow.

Views from parts of the town extend toward Gauri Shankar and other peaks on a clear day, offering an early preview of the mountain scenery that awaits trekkers heading into the Rolwaling valley over the days ahead.

Basic lodges and guesthouses in Charikot provide a comfortable final night of proper beds and hot showers before the more rustic conditions typical of the Rolwaling valley further along the trail.
